Thursday was a busy night for first responders and public works crews across Maui. At 6:02 p.m., Wailuku fire fighters responded to 2164 West Vineyard Street for a report of a structure fire. Fire crews arrived on scene for a single story, 720 square-foot structure, with the fire having been extinguished by the resident prior to their arrival.
Eight people (four adults and four children) living there were displaced. The American Red Cross was called to provide assistance to the displaced. A Fire Inspector on scene deemed the fire an accidental cooking fire. Damages were estimated to be $4,800.00 to the structure and $2,000.00 for the contents. There were no injuries reported.
About 90 minutes later, was shut off to a large portion of Wailuku for emergency waterline repairs. Service was restored by 8:30 Thursday night.
Then, about 30 minutes later, Honoapiilani Highway was closed between Kapunakea and Fleming Roads in Lahaina after a significant sewage spill reportedly overflowed across the highway fronting Blackie’s Pit Stop. The road was reopened to traffic at 7:20 a.m. today.
NOTE: Upon reopening the highway this morning, someone added a footnote that it was a waterline break and not a sewage spill that closed the highway. Thanks to MauiWatch for that clarification.
