Opponents of genetically modified organism – GMO – production in Hawai’i will converge on the Maui County building in Wailuku today at 1 p.m. to turn in the final supplemental collection of signatures to the County Clerk’s office. If deemed valid, the collection will be sufficient to force a crowd-sourced initiative on ballots this year requiring a moratorium on GMO production on Maui.
Last week, Maui TV News reported the County Clerk Danny Mateo had ruled many signatures “invalid,” because they could not be authenticated. SHAKA Movement spokesman Sam Small corrected MTVN after our headline erroneously stated that SHAKA had missed their deadline and that effectively stopped their progress.
We apologize for the error.
At today’s event, some 18,000 signatures will be submitted. The event will also feature appearances and speeches by Dr. Lorrin Pang, Alika Atay, Leohu Ryder, Bonnie Marsh, Mark Sheehan and special guest Jeffrey Smith.
