Two fires on Maui on Memorial Day were quickly handled by crews from Maui Fire Department – keeping small blazes from becoming big ones.
At 7 p.m. last night, Maui Fire companies from Paia and Kahului responded to an unscheduled cane fire on Holomua road, about 1.5 miles above old Maui High School. Approximately four acres of cane were burned before being brought under control at 8:03 p.m. There were no structures threatened and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Earlier in the afternoon, at 3:03 p.m., Kahului and Wailuku fire fighters responded to 583 Maalo Street for a structure fire. Crews arrived to find to find a 10 by five foot detached shed, approximately 75 percent involved in fire. The fire was quickly brought under control within a few minutes. A fire inspector investigating deemed the fire as accidental with damages to the structure at $2,500.00 and $9,000.00 for its contents. There were no injuries to report.
