A Maui woman died from injuries after the moped she was riding was struck from behind at the entrance of Puamana Beach Park in Lahaina Monday afternoon. Police have released her identity.
MPD officers say 51 year-old Mary Fletcher was attempting a left turn into the Puamana parking lot when she was struck from behind by a Kihei man in a pickup truck. Though wearing her helmet, Ms. Fletcher was unable to survive her wounds. The accident happened at 3:44 p.m. Monday. Fletcher was traveling north along Honoapi’ilani Highway – as was the pickup truck. While waiting for traffic that would allow an opening to turn left, the 78 year-old pickup truck drive hit her 2011 Romeo moped. The man suffered only minor injuries – primarily from the deployment of the airbag in his 2006 Food truck.
As a result of the collision, Ms. Fletcher was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room with life threatening injuries. While at Maui Memorial Medical Center ER, Ms. Fletcher succumbed to her injuries and died. The operator of the Ford was treated and released at the scene for minor injuries. The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still under investigation. Ms. Fletcher’s death was the fifth on Maui roadways over just the last 10 days. Hers was the eighth traffic fatality of the year – compared with four last year at this time
