The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for the Island of Maui, in effect until 4:00 p.m. This advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists.
EFFECTS: At 1:10 p.m. radar showed moderate to heavy rain over several different areas on Maui. Pockets of heavy rain are over windward west Maui from Kahakuloa to Wailuku, and over the north slopes of Haleakala near Pukalani. The Pukalani rain gage recently reported rain falling at one to two inches per hour. Other heavy showers were affecting southwest Maui near Ulupalakua. The areas of heavy rain were drifting slowly toward the east.
This advisory covers nearly all of Maui, except the northwest coast from Lahaina to Napili.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: STAY AWAY FROM STREAMS, DRAINAGE DITCHES AND LOW LYING AREAS PRONE TO FLOODING. RAINFALL AND RUNOFF WILL ALSO CAUSE HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS DUE TO PONDING, REDUCED VISIBILITY AND POOR BRAKING ACTION. DO NOT CROSS FAST FLOWING OR RISING WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE OR ON FOOT. TURN AROUND…DON’T DROWN.
