The National Weather Service in Honolulu has continued a SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT for MAUI COUNTY. See the latest satellite animation here.
EFFECTS: A risk of strong to severe thunderstorms today through Saturday will impact the islands. A powerful upper level low will continue to dig southeast toward the islands tonight. Ahead of this low, the atmosphere will continue to destabilize.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected to continue tonight and Saturday. As the upper low approaches the islands, few of these storms could become severe. In addition to frequent lightning, intense rainfall, and possible funnel clouds; severe thunderstorms are capable of producing damaging winds and hail the size of quarters or larger.
A Flood Watch is also in effect until Sunday at 6:00 a.m.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: BE READY FOR RAPID CHANGES IN THE WEATHER TODAY THOUGH SATURDAY. WHILE NOT EVERYONE WILL SEE INTENSE WEATHER, YOU SHOULD BE PREPARED TO MOVE INDOORS QUICKLY IF THE WEATHER APPEARS THREATING OR THUNDER IS HEARD. THOSE WITH OUTDOOR PLANS SHOULD HAVE AN IMMEDIATE WAY TO GET WATCHES OR WARNINGS THAT MAY BE ISSUED TODAY THOUGH SATURDAY.
