A Haiku woman and her son are safe after a fire tore through their home Thursday afternoon. At 4:56 p.m., Maui Fire Department units from Pa’ia, Makawao and Kahului responded to reports of a fire on Ali’i Koa Place in Haiku.
The fire, which started on the lanai, consumed about 20 percent of the structure before being brought under control at 5:18 p.m. No one was home at the time of the fire. Damages were estimated at $50,000 to the structure, and $10,000 to the contents. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
There were no reported injuries. The Red Cross is providing assistance to the mother and her son who were living in this home.
