A fatal crash overnight took the life of a 26 year-old woman. Maui Police say 26 year-old Kelley Peterson, who has no local address, died from injuries suffered after the car she was riding in struck a traffic signal pole in Lahaina.
The accident happened at 1:45 a.m. today when a 30 year-old man, driving a 1990 Toyota Corolla northbound along Honoapi’ilani Highway struck the pole at the highway intersection with Shaw Street. The vehicle continued to roll after the first impact, striking another traffic signal pole before coming to a stop. In the collision, Peterson, the front seat passenger, sustained life-threatening injuries. She was treated at the scene before being transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she succumbed to those injuries. The male driver was also taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
During their on-scene investigation, Police were able to locate the family of the woman who died. Her identity was released when she passed away at the hospital.
The car is equipped with retractable shoulder belts – which were being used. Lap belts, however, were not. The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still under investigation.
This is Maui County’s second fatal accident this month – and the third this year, compared with two at this time last year.
