It has been an extremely busy weekend for Maui Fire Fighters on the island’s north shore. Beginning at 6:48 p.m.,Friday, a series of blazes has kept crews on edge.
Maui Fire Department Engine -1, Engine 10, Tanker 10 Hazmat 10 and Battallion Chief 2 responded to a brush fire with reports of smoke and flames on the mauka side of the Kahekili Hwy and Waiehu Beach Road intersection. A resident on Lekeona Loop in Waiehu terrace reported seeing the smoke. Fire crews could see moderate smoke and an orange glow at the top of Malaihi Road but had trouble locating the fire.
When fire crews arrived at about 7:05 pm they found a 30 by 40 ft. structure fully involved with fire in the former Wailuku Agribusiness macadamia nut fields, next to North Waiehu stream. The fire was contained to the structure itself and did not spread to nearby vegetation. No other structures were threatened and no one was around. The roof and walls were already collapsed so the fire may have gone unnoticed for some time. Fire was called under control at 7:50 pm and extinguished at 9:36 pm.
Cause of the fire was undetermined and value was estimated at $24,000 to the 1,200 sq. ft. structure. No one was living in the structure .
