The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT for MAUI COUNTY. Strong and gusty trade winds are expected this weekend.
EFFECTS: Building high pressure in the wake of a weak frontal system is expected to generate strong and gusty northeast winds across the state Saturday and Sunday.
Winds will funnel and accelerate between the islands and leeward of mountain areas leading to much stronger than normal trades. These winds could gust as high as 40 to 50 mph in some locations with sustained values between 25 and 35 mph.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: WINDS OF THIS MAGNITUDE CAN DO DAMAGE TO TREES, POWERLINES, AND ROOFS. IN ADDITION, ANYONE WITH OUTDOOR PLANS, INCLUDING CAMPING, SHOULD BE MINDFUL THAT THESE WINDS WILL BE STRONG ENOUGH TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO TENTS AND TARPS. BRINGING IN AND OR TYING DOWN LOOSE OUTDOOR OBJECTS IS RECOMMENDED AHEAD OF THE ARRIVAL OF THE WINDS.
INFORMATION: Maui County Civil Defense will continue to monitor the situation. Please listen to your local radio and TV stations or NOAA Weather Radio for any updates.
