It was a small fire – but may have been intentionally set at the Hawai’i Job Corps building Tuesday. Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga issued that update this morning.
At 11:08 a.m. Tuesday, Firefighters from Paia, Makawao, and Kahului stations responded to a structure fire at the Hawaii Job Corps on 500 Ike Drive off Baldwin Avenue near Hali’imaile. The fire, which started in a storage area of the main building was quickly discovered and extinguished by Job Corps staff.
About 50 people within the structure evacuated.The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but may have been intentionally set, according to Fire Captain Ben Bland of the Paia Station. A Maui Fire Department inspector and the Maui Police Department are conducting the investigation.
Damages to the structure and its contents have been estimated at $300.00, and no injuries were reported.
