A Haiku woman is still in critical condition this morning after being struck by a vehicle Monday night on Kokomo Road between Haiku and Makawao.
Maui Police say that – around 7:32 p.m. Monday, the collision between a car and pedestrian happened while the pedestrian was tending to a disabled truck. The accident happened on Kokomo Road, North of Nehe Place in Haiku. The collision occurred when a 2002 Lexus RX300, traveling North on Kokomo Road collided into a female pedestrian walking northbound within the roadway, around a utility truck performing service in the area.
The operator of the Lexus is described as a 65 year-old female from Haiku. Neither the operator of the Lexus nor her juvenile male passenger was injured as a result of this crash. The pedestrian is described as a 52 year-old woman from Haiku. She was subsequently transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center via ambulance with life threatening injuries.
The operator and passenger of the Lexus were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, and the vehicle’s airbags did not deploy.
The involvement of speed and drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending. Kokomo Road was closed four four hours while officers conducted their on-scene investigation. The road reopened at 12:05 a.m. today. No update on the victim’s condition have been released.
