A Makawao man died today after a head-on collision on Baldwin Avenue near Ke’e Road. Maui Police say the victim was riding a motorcycle when he was struck by a southbound car shortly before 1 p.m. today.
Police say the collision occurred when a 2008 Nissan Versa, traveling south on Baldwin Avenue crossed left of center and collided head-on into a 2013 Kawasaki motorcycle that was traveling northbound on Baldwin Avenue.
The operator of the Nissan is described as a 69 year old-male from Makawao. He was subsequently transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center via ambulance for minor injuries. The motorcycle operator is a 55 year-old man from Makawao. He was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life threatening injuries. Later, the man succumbed to his injuries and died as a result of this crash.
The identity of the motorcycle operator is being withheld until notification of next of kin can be made.
The operator of the Nissan was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, and the vehicle’s airbags did deploy. The operator of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The involvement of speed and drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation continues.
This is Maui County’s second fatality this year, compared with one at the same time last year.
