Two visitors to Maui apparently drowned in separate incidents Wednesday. Maui Police and Fire report that – at 1:15 p.m. yesterday – officers were assigned to the Kaleialoha Condominiums, 3785 Lower Honoapiilani Road in Lahaina, for a report of a male swimmer in distress. Officers arrived at the scene and observed a man being assisted on the rocky shoreline fronting the condominium complex. The victim was unconscious although breathing on his own.
Paramedics transported the victim to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment. Investigation revealed that the victim was snorkeling and later found to be floating face down near the shoreline. At approximately 2:47 p.m., Maui Memorial Medical Center related that victim had expired. The victim is Joseph Klein, an 81 year-old man from Alberta, Canada.
Exactly three hours after the first call – at 4:15 P.M., MPD officers responded to Launiupoko Park regarding an unresponsive male victim on the beach. The officers arrived and found volunteers conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim.
Maui Fire Department personnel and paramedics arrived shortly thereafter to continue life saving efforts. However, the victim died at the scene. Investigation revealed that the victim was swimming in the ocean about 25 feet from shore on the south side of the park when he went under water but, according to witnesses, did not resurface. The victim was brought to shore and CPR was administered. The victim could not be revived. The victim is Lloyd H. Kahlandt, a 63 year-old man visiting from Tekamah, Nebraska.
Cause of death in both cases is pending autopsy results.
