Maui Police have identified the man killed in a Haleakala paragliding accident Monday as 34 year-old Paul J. MacDonald of Haiku.
On Monday at 6:37 p.m., Maui Fire and Rescue units from Kula along with Maui Police Department Officers responded to area of Mile Post marker 3 along Haleakala Crater Road for an unresponsive male. It was discovered that the victim was paragliding in the area when his equipment got caught on power lines. The victim was found unresponsive and laying on the roadway near his equipment.
The incident happened 16 minutes after sunset. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Cause of death has not been determined pending autopsy results.
Police have not released whether or not MacDonald was flying alone. Maui Electic Company restored power to those who lost electricity when the incident occurred. Crater Road was closed for three hours while Police conducted their investigation.
