At 6:37 p.m. Monday, Maui Fire and Rescue crews from Kula responded to mile marker 3.5 on Haleakala Crater road for a paraglider accident. Crews arrived to find the 34 year old male paraglider dead upon arrival. Maui Police Department is investigating at this time.
Crater road was closed in both directions from the time of the incident until 9:30 p.m. Monday.
On Sunday a visitor was airlifted out of the crater along Halemau’u Trail after becoming faint. MFD Air-1 transported the woman – who was suffering the apparent effects of altitude sickness – to Hosmer’s Grove, where she was transported in stable condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
