Maui Police have confirmed the identity of a man who died at noon, Monday, this week in Ka’anapali. Sixty-one year-old Michael J. Loughran of Napa, CA, apparently died while snorkeling shortly before noon Monday in front of Ka’anapali Beach Club complex.
Medics and Maui Fire Department personnel were already at the scene conducting CPR on the victim when Maui Police arrived. The man was not able to be revived and he died at the scene. Investigation revealed that the victim was snorkeling in front of Ka’anapali Beach Club and was caught in a strong current. He was attempting to swim back to shore, but, was apparently having difficulty breathing and held on to a buoy. A kayaker brought the victim to shore but the man collapsed a short time later.
Cause of death has not been determined pending autopsy results. Mr. Loughran’s family has been notified of the tragedy – thus allowing Police to release his identity.
