All were evacuated and none injured when a fire gutted a unit at Sunset Terrace Apartments in Lahaina last night. At 6:03 p.m., Maui Fire Department crews from Lahaina (L-3, E-11), Wailuku (E-1), and Kahului (HM-10) responded to 3626 Lower Honoapi’ilani Road – The Sunset Terrace apartments, for a reported structure fire.
Arriving units observed smoke and flames showing from a third story unit. The fire which was contained to this single unit was called under control at 7:18 p.m. The fire did not extend beyond this unit which was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Power to Maui Electric customers in the area was lost for about an hour.
Approximately 50 occupants of this complex evacuated. The lone occupant of the involved unit is displaced but will be staying with relatives. Evacuees are being allowed back into their apartments. No injuries were reported.
MFD Inspectors and MPD CID are on scene investigating. The unit was a one bedroom apartment approximately 620 square feet in size. After the investigation, the fire cause remains “undetermined” until more information can be provided. There was no immediate evidence to indicate that this fire was intentionally set, but a police investigation continues. Fire damages were estimated at $60,000 for the structure and $40,000 to its contents. Although the displaced occupant refused assistance, Red Cross was notified.
