A powerful wave of thunderstorms in the central part of the state sent west Moloka’i into darkness early today. Shortly after midnight last night, approximately 632 customers in West End on Moloka’i lost power when lightning struck and blew two lightning arrestors on a transformer in Maunaloa. Power was restored to 566 customers by 5:25 a.m. and remaining customers were brought back online at 7:15 a.m.
At 11:47 a.m. today, 1,462 customers on the East End of Molokai lost electrical power and were restored by 2 p.m. The cause of this power outage remains under investigation.
Maui Electric Company emergency repair crews braved extremely dangerous conditions to reconnect customers. MECO thanks customers for their patience – and we all thank MECO for their excellent employees and their selfless efforts.
