A middle-aged man nearly toppled down a slippery slope today on the Pali Trail over the Kaheawa summit of Kahalawai. Maui Fire Department Dispatch received a call at 8:14 this morning for a hiker (a male in his late 50s or early 60’s) who had fainted while hiking. The group of four were about five minutes up the steep trail when the male started to feel light-headed. He then passed out.
His friends managed to catch him so he didn’t strike his head on any rocks but still ended up with some scrapes. The decision to fly him out was due to the rains that fell earlier making the already rocky trail even more slippery than normal. Air 1 and Rescue 10 were dispatched at 8:40 a.m. They arrived on scene within five minutes and airlifted the hiker to a landing zone. He was then placed into an ambulance and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition. No word yet on where the man is from.
