A Kihei teen is in critical condition this morning after a near-fatal collision with a pickup truck on Pi’ilani Highway Friday night. The accident closed the highway between Ohukai and Kulanihakoi Roads from 7:39 until 10:51 p.m. Initial reports were – thankfully – inaccurate that there had been a fatality.
The accident happened at 7:15 p.m. when a northbound 2005 Chevrolet, driven by a 48 year-old Kihei man, attempted a left turn from the highway onto Kaonoulu Street. Apparently the driver did not see the approaching 2008 Suzuki blue motorcycle, operated by an 18 year-old man from Kihei. The truck turned into the path of the southbound motorcycle, causing a “T-bone” crash with the direct impact bearing down on the teen. He suffered life-threatening injuries after striking the passenger side of the car.
Air bags deployed in the car but the lone occupant was apparently not injured. The motorcycle operator was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol have not yet been determined as factors in the crash.
