The woman who perished in that fire in South Maui this morning was 77 year-old Hazel Jones – the only resident of the home. Maui Police just identified the victim and are investigating the event as an “unattended death.”
According to Capt. Kris Sakamoto, at 5:44 a.m. today, Maui Fire Department crews from Kihei (E6), Wailea (E14, L14, T14) and Kahului (E10, R10, HM10) were dispatched to a structure fire at 232 Kanani Rd. in Kihei. The house was a 2,300 square foot, single story house. Kihei (E6) was the first on scene at 5:48 a.m., followed by the other units minutes after.
When E6 arrived the house was already over 50 percent involved. The fire was brought under control at 7 a.m. The body of the resident was discovered inside the house. She was the only resident of the house and was pronounced dead on scene. The cause is still under investigation. Damage is estimated at $50,000 for contents and $250,000 for the structure.
Fire investigators say early indicators seem to point to the fire being an accident.
