A Wailuku man is dead tonight after the moped he was operating was hit from behind by a motorcycle today in Waiehu.
Maui Police say that at 3:53 p.m. today, on Waiehu Beach Road at the intersection of Linekona Place in Wailuku, a 2004 Suzuki GSXR motorcycle was traveling west on Waiehu Beach Road when it collided into the rear of a black 2012 Ningbo GTX moped that was also traveling west on Waiehu Beach Road.
Following the collision with the moped, the motorcycle continued west and sideswiped the left side of a 2004 Honda Accord four door sedan that was parked facing west along the west bound shoulder of Waiehu Beach Road.
As a result of this collision, the 25 year-old motorcycle operator, from Wailuku, suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room. However, the male operator of the moped, identified as Earle Maielua, a 47 year-old Wailuku resident, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Neither the operator of the motorcycle nor the operator of the moped was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Speed is suspected as a factor while Alcohol/Drug involvement and are still under investigation. The road was closed for nearly seven hours following the crash while officers conducted their on-scene investigation.
This is Maui County’s 12th fatality of 2013 compared to 20 this time last year.
