Maui Police have issued more details about that fatal bicycle accident in Waihe’e Friday.
Police report that, at 2:49 p.m., a 28 year-old female visitor from the Netherlands was riding her bicycle heading in the Wailuku direction on Kahekili Hwy near Mile Marker 8, along with her 31 year-old boyfriend, and his 69 year-old father when she lost control of her bicycle and went off the cliff on the Makai shoulder of the roadway.
Preliminary investigation revealed that at about the area of Makamaole Gulch (near Camp Maluhia) she lost control of her bicycle going off the cliff and fell approximately 125 feet down into the valley below.
Police and Fire personnel responded to the scene and the victim’s lifeless body was recovered from the gulch by Fire Rescue personnel.
Detectives from the Wailuku Criminal Investigation Division were contacted and responded to the scene.
The Department’s Visitor Oriented Police Officer (VOP) and a Police Chaplain also responded and are assisting the victim’s boyfriend and his family.
The victim’s name is being held until next of kin is notified.
The investigation continues.
