A fisherman is dead this morning. Maui Fire and Rescue crews were called to Ma’alaea Harbor at 4:21 a.m. to search for a missing fisherman.
Units R10, E10 & BC 2 were dispatched to investigate a missing fisherman at Ma’alaea Harbor. Upon arrival at 4:45 a.m., the fisherman was confirmed missing by his wife.
His personal items were found near the rocks, some of the items were in the waters surrounding the harbor. Two Rescue 10 jet skis were deployed and a joint coastal / open ocean search commenced.
The missing party, 46 years of age, was found at approximately 5:30 this morning floating face down about 200 yards away from the break wall near the beach area fronting the residential homes in Ma’alaea.
The fisherman’s body was then transported to the Ma’alaea Boat Ramp. Upon arrival of the body at the boat ramp MPD took over the investigation. The man, identified as Gary Y. Ibara of Wailuku by Police, had been fishing since Friday night.
