25 Mar 2012 - 7:12 pm

On Sunday March 25, 2012 at or about 0636 hours, a Motor Vehicle Crash occurred on Kula Highway, 140 feet north of Noholoa Place.  Unit-1 (1998 Blue Dodge Neon) was northbound on Kula Highway (Paia bound).  It was operated by 21 year old male, resident of Pukalani.  Unit-1 operator was one of six occupants within the vehicle.

Unit-1 is believed to be traveling at a high rate of speed.  The operator lost control and Unit-1 began to spin counterclockwise.  Unit-1 crossed over the double solid yellow lines that separated opposing traffic.  Unit-1 continued within the opposing lane of travel and collided with Unit-2.

Unit-2 was traveling southbound (Kihei), within its lane of travel.  Unit-2 was being operated by a 46 year old male, resident of Pukalani.  Unit-2 operator was one of three occupants within the vehicle.  Following the collision, Unit-2 came to rest on the south shoulder of Kula Highway, facing north.

As a result of the collision, Unit-1 sheered in half.  The front half of Unit-1 came to rest along the guard rail.  The rear half of Unit-1 came to rest in a brush area on the west shoulder of Kula Highway.  The final resting positions of Unit-1 (two halves) were approximately 185 feet apart.

Out of the 6 occupants of Unit-1, only the operator was wearing a seatbelt.  The 5 passengers that were not using a seatbelt were all ejected from the vehicle.
