On Monday, March 19th, 2012 at about 9:37 p.m., a motor vehicle crash occurred on Kane Street at the intersection of Vevau Street. A 2007 KTM / EXC motorcycle (Unit-1) collided with a 2002 Ford F-150 pick-up truck, (Unit-2).
Unit 1was traveling south on Kane Street at high rate of speed. Unit 2 was traveling in the opposite direction on Kane Street. Unit 2 turned left to enter the private parking lot at Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center. Unit 1 collided into the right rear bed panel of Unit 2.
The motorcycle was being operated by 44 year old male, resident of Makawao. The operator suffered critical, life threatening, injuries as a result of this crash. He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency room for further treatment. Unit 2 was being operated by 20 year old male. Unit 2 operator was not injured. Unit 2 had a 19 year old male passenger. He was not injured.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT:
Unit 1 operator was not using a helmet. Unit 2 operator and passenger were using seatbelts. Unit 2 was not equipped with an airbag. The involvement of speed is suspected (Unit 1). The involvement of alcohol and drugs remain under investigation at this time.
