Two brothers (17 and 27 years of age), both Maui residents, were reported missing at approximately 9:30 p.m. last night after failing to return home. Fire Crews and Rescue 10 were on scene at 10 p.m. Both crews searched for two hours making voice contact with the parties just before midnight. The hikers were believed to be on an inaccessible ridge. The two were trapped in an area nicknamed “Commando Trail” on private property in East Maui.
Wet conditions combined with steep terrain and darkness made the search too difficult and dangerous to continue. The parties were advised to seek shelter and stay in place till daylight.
The search for the missing hikers resumed this morning. MFD’s Air -1 along with Rescue personnel hauled out the two hikers. Both were rescued and taken to safety by 7:20 this morning. They required no medical attention.
