Rain, Rain Go Away? – Not Yet

08 Mar 2012 - 9:08 am

The National Weather Service says thunderstorms flared up overnight over Maui and Molokai., creating flooding problems on Molokai and the potential for flooding on Maui.

The National Weather Service lifted a flash flood warning for Molokai just before 5:30 a.m. and a flood advisory for Maui, where moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms were reported over Windward Maui from Hana to Kahakuloa overnight into this morning.

Overnight, intense showers created flooding and debris problems on Highway 450 on Molokai. Police said the highway was impassable at several locations including the Kaunakakai gulch, just west of Kaunakakai. The highway was also closed over the Kawela gulch, the Kamalo gulch, about 2 miles east of Kamalo and at mile marker 14.

The Department of Education said Kilohana School on Molokai is closed today because of the weather and road conditions.

The National Weather Service also issued a special marine warning for the waters between Maui and Hawaii island because of a thunderstorm producing hail and strong winds. The warning is in effect until 8:30 a.m.

The rain on Maui and Molokai is a result of what’s left of the weather system that dropped heavy rain on Kauai and Oahu earlier in the week and over the weekend.

Forecasters say more rain may be on the way for the state for Kauai, Oahu, and Maui counties as another weather system develops over the state. There’s a slight chance of thunderstorms developing tonight.

The forecast this morning calls for mostly cloudy skies with windward and mauka areas, with some showers blown over to leeward sides by strong, gusty tradewinds of 15 to 30 mph, with gusts of 50 mph.

As unstable weather conditions return over the western end of the state, forecasters say heavy showers could develop tonight, possibly even thunderstorms. The chance of thunderstorms continues into Saturday. So far, Sunday’s forecast doesn’t call for thunderstorms. But residents can expect scattered showers throughout the state.

Hawaii island can also expect heavy rain tonight with the possibility of thunderstorms on Friday.
