At approximately 1:37 p.m. today, two of Maui Electric’s generating units at the Maalaea Power Plant tripped offline causing a power outage that is currently affecting parts of the island including Pukalani, Makawao, Kula, Waiehu, Spreckelsville, Napili, Mahinahina, parts of Kahului, and Haiku as far as Hana town. Hana town is currently being powered by generating units in Hana.
The sudden loss of power caused a load shed which is a safety measure that protests the electrical system and prevents a longer, more widespread outage.
MECO is working as quickly and safely as possible to identify the problem and restore power to its customers. In the interim, we urge drivers to use caution on the roadways especially at intersections. Go slowly and yield to traffic.
We will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available.
