Several bills making their way through the Hawaii Legislature would require owners of vacation rentals who live off-island or out-of-state to hire a local property manager to manage their homes.
Honolulu Civil Beat reports many non-resident vacation home owners are saying the bills would cost them thousands of dollars a year to rent out their homes, while supporters of the bills say the state is losing millions of dollars in revenue from non-resident owners who don’t pay Hawaii taxes.
Civil Beat reports House Bill 1707 was tabled last week, but a similar measure, HB1706, is up for a vote on the House floor, while Senate Bill 2089 will be heard by a Senate committee Wednesday morning.
