The body of a 45-year-old man was recovered Thursday morning after he went overboard hours earlier from a boat about two miles off the southwest point of Lanai, police said. Initial reports indicated the man had been “rescued.” Sadly, that did not turn out to be the case.
The man had been aboard the 37-foot vessel “No Problem,” a private charter fishing boat which had launched from Lahaina.
Maui County firefighters and the Coast Guard began searching for the man after a 5:30 a.m. report. The Maui Fire Department informed the Coast Guard that the man had been found around 8:15 a.m.
Identification of the victim is being withheld until his family can be notified. An autopsy is pending.
