A 20- year-old Makawao man is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Kula early today.

Maui Police say Cody Ikaika Miyoshi Endo was traveling toward Makawao in a 1994 Toyota pickup shortly after midnight today. He apparently lost control of his vehicle and hit a guard rail, after which the truck slid across Crater Road, hit an embankment and became airborne. The truck landed in the backyard of a residence on Palena Place.

Police say Endo was not wearing a seatbelt, causing him to be partially ejected from the truck. The speed limit in the area is 30 mph. The vehicle is described as “lifted” with “extended tires.” The involvement of speed and alcohol are suspected. Drug consumption remains under investigation.

The road was closed for four hours while police conducted their investigation.

The man’s death is the third in Maui County this year – compared with none at this time in 2011.
