A Lahaina man died of injuries sustained when he crashed his motorcycle into a parked vehicle yesterday in Ka’anapali.
Maui Police say that 21 year-old Wayan Decosta was riding his 2001 Yamaha motorcycle toward Napili on Honoapi’ilani Highway around 3:35 p.m. Witnesses say the man was traveling at a high rate of speed (80-100 mph), weaving between vehicles and passing on the right. At one point, Decosta tried to pass a van by moving into the bicycle lane – when he impacted the rear of an unattended, parked truck.
He was pronounced dead at 4 p.m. at Maui Memorial Medical Center. MPD officials say speed is suspected as a contributing factor in the crash. They have not yet determined if drugs or alcohol were involved. Decosta was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
This is Maui County’s second traffic fatality of the year. There were none at this point in 2011.
