Monk Seal Rehab Center on Big Island Closer to Reality

19 Jan 2012 - 8:03 am

The Marine Mammal Center recently received two anonymous donations for its proposed rehabilitation center for Hawaiian monk seals on the Big Island, putting it $150,000 away from being able to break ground on the $3.2 million facility.

The Garden Island newspaper reports that the Sausalito, Calif.-based nonprofit this month received a $500,000 donation from a donor that had already given $250,000 and a pledge of $150,000 last week from another anonymous donor, brining donations secured to $1.55 million. The newspaper reports that the agency needs $1.7 million to start construction on the facility, which will be built on 2.6 acres at Keahole point near the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority in Kailua-Kona.
