A Maui man was killed early this morning when his car veered of the road on the south coast of Maui and hit a tree.

Police said the one-car accident occurred at 4:24 a.m. The victim, whose name was being withheld pending notification of relatives on Maui, was driving on the Makena Alanui Road when it veered off the west shoulder of the road and hit a tree.

It is unknown if speed or alcohol were factors, Maui police said.

The death was Maui County’s second fatal vehicle crash this year. There were none at the same point in 2011.
