Hawaii lawmakers have told the four county governments that they are unlikely to raid the counties’ share of the hotel room tax during this year’s legislative session.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that House Finance Chairman Marcus Oshiro told Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa, Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho and representatives for Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle and Big Island Mayor Billy Kenoi — who were in Washington for the U.S. Conference of Mayors meetings this week — that the Legislature was unlikely to take any more of the revenue from the counties’ share of the transient accommodations tax, which was limited to $93 million last year.
