‘Hulu’ Lindsey to Take OHA Seat Today

17 Jan 2012 - 9:03 am

HONOLULU – Governor Neil Abercrombie has named Maui resident Carmen “Hulu” Lindsey to the island’s trustee seat of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA). She fills the vacancy left by the resignation of  Trustee Boyd Mossman. Ms. Lindsey will serve on an interim basis until November, when a special election will be held to fill the remaining two years of Mr. Mossman’s term.

Governor Abercrombie was tasked with selecting a successor to Trustee Mossman when OHA declared an impasse at making the decision.

“Hulu Lindsey is well respected in the community and is committed to the task at hand, which is to do the job necessary until the people of Maui have the opportunity to elect a trustee for the upcoming term,” said Governor Abercrombie. “I am very grateful to have found someone who is knowledgeable about the legislative process and the issues that OHA will be addressing in the upcoming session. Ms. Lindsey is focused and ready.”

Ms. Lindsey is the owner of businesses Lindsey Realty and Kahulu Productions, and is well-known as a local entertainer. She previously worked for Maui Land and Pineapple Company, Inc., the County of Maui, and for Governor John A. Burns.

“I am honored by the Governor’s appointment and will work tirelessly to serve our Native Hawaiian beneficiaries on the island of Maui,” Ms. Lindsey said. “I believe my background in business will be an asset to OHA and look forward to working with my new colleagues.”

Ms. Lindsey will be sworn in as an OHA Trustee today.

“We welcome Hulu Lindsey to the Board of Trustees,” said Colette Machado, Chairperson of the OHA Board of Trustees. “I look forward to working closely with her on the important issues affecting our beneficiaries on the island of Maui.”
