After Recent Dips – Gas Prices Headed Back Up

06 Jan 2012 - 8:29 am

Gas prices are rising again after 11 consecutive weeks of declines, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.

Today’s statewide average for regular unleaded of $4.03 is 2 cents more than a week ago.

Honolulu’s average price increased by 3 cents from about $3.86 a gallon last week to $3.89 today. That price is 5 cents more than a month ago and 33 cents higher than this time last year.

In Hilo, the average gas price is $4.22 a gallon, 3 cents more than last week, six cents more than last month and 51 cents higher than this time last year. Wailuku’s average is $4.35 a gallon, a penny more than last week, 6 cents more than last month and 33 cents higher than on this date last year.

Hawaii continues to have the most expensive gas in the nation, followed by Alaska with a $3.86 state average and California at $3.66. The national retail average price for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline is $3.31, 6 cents higher than last week.

“On an annual average basis, U.S. motorists paid the all-time highest price for gasoline in 2011, surpassing the former all-time record set in 2008,” said Diane Peterson, regional manager for AAA Hawaii. “We’ll have to see what 2012 brings.”
